Finasteride

Finasteride works by suppressing the Type II 5a-reductase enzyme from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which is the leading cause of hair loss. This oral treatment is taken once daily. The downside of this medication is the potential side effects. It has sexually related side effects such as erection problems, decreased semen, and a decreased sex drive. The occurrence of side effects while on this medicine is low, but it is present for some men. Also, this treatment is for men only. Finasteride has been linked to birth defects in women of childbearing age, and women should not even handle this medication if the pill breaks or cracks. However, in recent years, doctors have started using Finasteride with females that are in their menopausal years.

Dutasteride

Dutasteride suppresses Type I & II 5a-reductase enzymes from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or DHT, which is the leading cause of hair loss. Many people believe Dutasteride is more effective than Finasteride because it is a stronger inhibitor of DHT. But the downside of Dutasteride is it takes weeks for it to filter out of the body completely, compared to Finasteride which takes days.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil stimulates the hair follicle to produce hair. Lower doses of oral minoxidil are considered safe to take for treating hair loss by many physicians. The most common side effect is headaches, but the dosage for treating hair loss is low, and so is the chance of having side effects. However, it should be used carefully with those who have severe hypertension or increased risk for cardiovascular issues.

Topical Treatments for Hair Loss

The nice thing about topical treatments is that you can have numerous ingredients in one formulation. You can block DHT, stimulate growth, and provide nutrients all in one formulation.

The nice thing about topical formulations is that there are almost no side effects. The only side effect I have seen with topical treatments is scalp irritation, and the percentage is very low. Those with sensitive skin or some type of scalp condition, like eczema, may be unable to use this topical treatment.

Prescription topical treatments for hair loss

The right active ingredients are only part of the equation; the other part is having a pleasant user experience, which means how the product feels on your scalp. Topical products can be a solution, gel, or lotion. Most solutions and gels are colorless and odorless. Our lotion looks and feels like a lotion. All of them dry on the scalp, and they are not greasy. Once dried, it feels like a hair gel; it leaves the hair slightly stiff. Lastly, it washes out easily with water or shampoo.

The only downside of using a topical is having longer hair. Longer hair means it takes more time to apply the product to the scalp, and it is harder to keep it from getting messy. Also, with longer hair, you tend to use more product when applying to the scalp.
